The most well known legend is that there was a priest St. Valentine, the priest in the third century Rome, defied the rule of Roman Emperor Claudius Two and brought the wrath of the emperor upon him. Claudius Two outlawed marriage for young men so that they can serve the emperor's army better. But St. Valentine secretly helped the young couples to get married which led to his imprisonment and order of his death by the Emperor. Another story is of the unrequited love of the priest St. Valentine who fall in love with the jailer's daughter during the imprisonment. Before his death he wrote a letter to his love and at then end of letter wrote "From your Valentine". Although there is no conclusive evidence to decide about the authenticity of the stories but the myths certainly emphasizes St. Valentine as a heroic, sympathetic and above all a romantic figure.
